We are saddened to report the passing of Dr. Fredric J. Baur, the inventor of the Pringle's can. As per his wishes, some of his cremains were in fact buried inside an example of his work.

First Superdelegate Arrives in Denver?
In 2003, Nebraska resident Stan Romanek just happened to be filming his window and caught a peeping alien on tape. This was released Friday in Denver to scientists only. The general public wasn't supposed to see it for months, but of course it was on YouTube seconds later:

Lubbock Weekend
We spent Memorial Day Weekend in Lubbock.
Science Spectrum in Lubbock is a great place. You can walk on a keyboard,

take a look at a marble run made of everyday objects,
create your own sea,
rule the cosmos,
and pedal a bike to make an anometer spin.
Later, at a secret meeting place,
we met up and went to Cracker Barrel with Mr. and Mrs. Anonymous, frequent commenters on this blog, whose faces I can't reveal because they're, well, anonymous.
We had a great time, but it was good to be back home.

Robert gets to "shine" at his school's Kid Olympics, taking home a blue ribbon in shotput, a 4th place ribbon in the 50-yard dash, and a participation ribbon for the long jump! And what a hat too!Wednesday, May 14, 2008

Kermit Still Trying to Milk the Frog!

KERMIT - Kermit the Frog may have made a brief hop through town, but he's had a lasting impact.
KERMIT - Kermit the Frog may have made a brief hop through town, but he's had a lasting impact.
While it's now called Kermit Celebration Days and has no official affiliation with the frog, event organizer Linda Fruge said the idea for an annual celebration came from the 2005 event."It's a pretty good success," she said.
The 2005 Kermit the Frog celebration was looking for between 15,000 and 30,000 visitors. Instead, it received around 8,000.But the frog's appearance as honorary homecoming king at a Friday night high school football game with a 60-foot tall helium balloon overhead created excitement.
And, though Kermit the town was named for the eldest son of former President Theodore Roosevelt, and Kermit the Frog took his name from a childhood friend of Muppets creator Jim Henson, the city continues to play off the frog.
A large likeness of the frog still overtakes much of Kermit's water tower and a street is named in his honor.
The event also includes food vendors and merchants, which is what continues to draw people to Kermit Celebration Days, Fruge said.
The 2007 event drew 52 vendors, Fruge said, and she hopes to top that this year.
A musical performance also helped bring 4,000 people to the event.

In Celebration of New Life
On Friday afternoon the butterflies in Liz's classroom hatched. Robert and I helped Liz release them outside, to protect them from classroom predators (students!). The butterfly pavilion is a big bag in which the caterpillars (painted lady variety in this case) cocoon and hatch.
Robert named some of them as they were released. This one was Lily.
And this one was Twinlily, who just sat there and had to be picked up and tossed before she/he would fly.
No, this is not a school lunch. The seven white shells are what remains of the chrysalises which have hatched already, and the two dark green ones have yet to hatch:
Friday night at 7, the American Cancer Society's local Relay for Life started. Maybe 500 people were in attendance when we went, but it felt like the whole town was there. It went on all night but we left at about 10.
At our feet is a luminarium which we purchased in memory of my brother Norman who we lost a little over seven years ago.
This is the same stadium that once hosted the famous frog. Have a great weekend!
