Landmark: The Wink Sink(s)

This is Winkler County's most interesting geological phenomenon. It's about six miles southwest of Kermit. I stole these pictures from a site called Caver.net: The Wink Sink (or Kermit Crater) opened up without warning June 1st through 4th of 1980. It gained national attention because it is near state highway 115, which was closed for some time. No one knows for sure what caused this or how deep this thing is. A UTPB diving team years ago failed to find a bottom.
You're not supposed to be able to ride an ATV down there! This was once a straight pipe!

There is a second Wink Sink now, larger than the first and a mile south of the first. It opened up in 2002, almost 22 years to the day of the original. And - this is weird - when it opened up, the first one, which had stabilized in size, began growing again! Geologists are watching a depression which they say will someday be Wink Sink 3!

WINK SINK LINKS:

They're still trying to fund a study of the sinks.

See Wink Sink 2 from the air.

This is from a book called Weird Texas.

Lots more history including original newspaper stories!

When I was growing up in the Bible belt, people used to say "sinfull" California was going to slide into the ocean.

Well, low and behold, California hasn't disappeared but Texas is sinking!

Who'd ever thunk such a thang could happen?

I have heard that !

Anonymous: I bet California is no more sinful than Texas. Have a great day!

Well, there are a lot of Texans in California!!! Guess they want to trade sinking in for sliding. Just be sure and buy your property inland so you'll end up with beach front property.

David Kirk said...

Anonymous: Kermit is about as inland as you can get.

So, you think you'll have beach front property? Have you heard something you're not sharing? Will everything west of TX be sliding into the ocean? Who is your source of information? Inquiring minds want to know!!!

Oh the other hand, perhaps all the states west of TX will just fall into your big old sing holes. Something to think about!

Toto, I think we're back in TX!!!!

David Kirk said...

Perhaps only Texas will sink into the earth. Only time will tell!

Has anyone reported this to Al Gore?

David Kirk said...

Anonymous: Al Gore wouldn't care if Bush country sinks into the earth!

Anonymous said...

What do you mean Al wouldn't care?

It probably has something to do with global warming. See what happens when you suck all the oil out of the ground?

Course it could be karma. Remember what Enron did to CA?

The local oil industry says that taking oil out of the ground does not leave a cavernous space because oil is generally trapped in porous rock.

Fine, disregard my oil sucking theory, why don't ya? LOL

Someone has some 'slainin' to do! What cause those big ol' holes?

Oh well, your Wink Sinks are just a mystery. At least our pits have an explanation!

Oops, mybad?
That should be "splaining"!

Anonymous: A popular theory is that the water table (that is the water at the bottom of the sinkhole!) dissolved a salt dome below the ground.

A sinkhole near Jal, however, is reportedly dry at the bottom and may have blown the ground outward, which is even stranger!

Anonymous said...

Obviously the water/salt theory is in error.

The sink holes aren't really sink holes at all. Don't tell anyone but they are cleverly disguised portals used by the Roswell aliens! They enter in Jal and exit in Wink.

Why TX and not NM, you ask? Too much publicity in NM led them to your state? Besides, everyone, (even aliens) know that everything is bigger in TX, even urban legends.

I've been an engineer in oil and gas production for 43 years. In a nutshell, it is little discussed that in areas of secondary recovery, water is injected into the ground under great pressure to force out oil and gas. That water does not always go where it's supposed to. Stray water can channel out and wash away or desolve salt beds located a thousand feet or so beneath ground leve. When that happens, a cavern or void in the salt develops, and there is nothing left to support the roof, which settles down. There is no doubt that it's oil industry related. Look at where it's been happening..... Wink, Jal, Loco Hills, Artesia. All oil producing centers. Haven't heard of one anywhere else outside of the very wet states.

Have you heard of HAARP ? On youtube there are a lot of frightening theories that actually make sense regarding sink holes.
Look up HAARP and Jesse Ventura on youtube-
